The Catholic Diocese of Warri in Delta State has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following reports of his alleged marriage in the United States.

This decision was announced in a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” dated Thursday, January 16, 2025, and shared with journalists in Warri on Sunday.

The statement, jointly signed by the Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, and the Chancellor/Notary, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA.

Footage of the wedding reportedly circulated widely on social media, prompting the diocese to take action.

“By entering into marriage, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension in line with Canon 1394 S1. As Bishop of Warri, I officially decree that he is suspended from performing sacred ministry,” Rt. Rev. Ewherido stated in the release.

The diocese disclosed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had submitted a request on November 30, 2024, to be released from his canonical obligations as a priest. However, he reportedly failed to complete the required documentation before proceeding with the marriage.

“As a result, he is forbidden from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity. All canonical consequences of this suspension are effective immediately, as per Canon 1333,” the statement added.

The Diocese also noted that Fr. Oghenerukevwe has the right to appeal the suspension decree but must demonstrate a commitment to reform for any reconsideration.

“May God grant him the grace to reflect on his actions and guide him toward reconciliation,” the statement concluded.
